According to data gathered by the University of Copenhagen, the African continent makes up 50% of the estimated one billion people living worldwide without formal identity documents. The COVID pandemic made things worse, enhancing the importance of digital identity. Identity is crucial for social mobility The WEF (World Economic Forum) uses the Social Mobility Index to measure key pillars that ensure social mobility. All key pillars require citizens to be able to prove their identity, so without a proper infrastructure, there can’t be any social mobility for them. Undocumented citizens risk becoming excluded from essential services, such as healthcare and government aid becomes more complicated.
